  I will discuss the assumptions and challenges underlying N-body simulatio
 ns for self-interacting dark matter (SIDM). I will present a first-princip
 les derivation that provides a map from a microscopic particle physics des
 cription of SIDM to a representation of macroscopic simulation particles\,
  for theories in the short mean-free-path regime. An effective cross secti
 on naturally emerges from this procedure\, which depends on the fundamenta
 l particle physics cross section. Such mapping can facilitate the explorat
