DRAFT - postponed - to be rescheduledGrids and e-Infrastructure: enabling research in the future This is a first run of an afternoon intended to support researchers in the University of Edinburgh in their exploration of the possibilities opened by Grid Computing and e-Infrastructure.

The goals of the afternoon are to:

• Introduce key concepts
• Map the major projects and initiatives that are most relevant to researchers
• Indicate routes open to those wishing to explore further: how to gain accounts on different infrastructures,...
• Invite feedback to improve further events of this nature.
• Assess interest in follow-on events addressing different aspects of grids and e-infrastructure.

The afternoon gives concepts and high level descriptions only. Follow-on courses, usually of two days duration for different technologies can be scheduled.

14:40 → 15:10 European Initiatives

Many research collaborations are international. These can be empowered by an international e-infrastructure.

The major European initiatives that integrate national initiatives in networking (GEANT), high performance computing (DEISA) and grid computing (EGEE) are described.

An introduction is also given to OMII-Europe (creating services that can be deployed on diverse grids) and ICEAGE (International Collaboration to Extend and Advance Grid Education).

UK e-Infrastructure comprises the networks (JANET, SuperJANET, UKLight), the National Grid Service and the Open Middleware Infrastructure Institute (OMII-UK). An introduction to these is given with emphasis on the National Grid Service.

This talk summarises the options open to researchers if they wish to further explore the potential of the initiatives that have been introduced today.

This will include:

• How to gain an account on the NGS
• An introduction to the OMII-Europe Evaluation Infrastructures that exist to give new adopters opportunities to try different grid technologies.
• Sources of further information and training.
• Local sources of support
