LHC BGI HV Feedthrough and Connector Discussion
Draft
Participants: William, Lauren, Gunn, Mark, Wilfried
Mechanical:
-
Compact solution using existing HV feedthrough + short cable + sealed 90° bending box* mounted on BGI tank
-
Box*: RF tight, removable back panel, internal G10 insulation
-
Minimum bending radius of HV cable respected using rigid support (William)
-
Simple stainless steel test flange (rectangular, no knife edge) for HV tests can be provided
-
Lauren to create 3D model, check space between tank and magnet aperture, iterate with XEI
Electrical:
- No commercial solution meets compact + 50 Ω + non-magnetic requirements
- Short non-50 Ω section (~10 cm max), then transition via 3Y LEMO to 50 Ω cable
- HV insulation: ~2 mm/kV guideline (~60 mm for 30 kV), use insulated cable + HV putty tape
-
RF validation via stretched wire method on final instrument
-
Front-end cooling HV box: active or passive cooling options
Actions:
-
Wilfred: retrieve HV cable samples (Stephane storage), check LEMO compatibility - DONE, 3Y Series not compatible with new HV cable
- Lauren: 3D model and space validation
- Mark: back-end box design (50 Ω termination + cooling)
- Gunn: HV simulations (fields, triple points, breakdown)
