240 mm2 joint sampling and characterization

• It was agreed that EN-EL will provide to MPE the following samples for testing and characterization Action: D. Gameiro

• 2 x 240 mm² CU cable samples , 5 m long, including 5 equally spaced joints and fitted with M16 lugs on both ends.
• 2 x 240 mm² CU cable samples , 5 m long, without joints and fitted with M16 lugs on both ends.
• 2 x 240 mm² CU cable samples , 5 m long, without joints and without lugs.

• TE-MPE will perform the testing and characterisation measurements Action: D. Carrillo
• The results will be presented at a forthcoming MCF topical meeting

Galvanic separation of CLIC power cables

• TE-MPE indicated that, should galvanic separation between the CLIC units and the superconducting circuits be required, it would be implemented close to the CLIC units rather than along the cable route. Consequently, the cable joints foreseen for installation and pulling purposes cannot be used to accommodate connectors or switching devices.
• TE-MPE is currently investigating solutions that would integrate the galvanic separation directly on top of the CLIC units. Action: D. Carrillo
• Proposed solutions will be presented at a forthcoming MCF topical meeting

Circuit resistance and increase of cross-section

• Preliminary calculations indicate that the total resistance of the supply and return paths using 240 mm² Cu cables is close to the acceptable limit, particularly for Q1.
• The introduction of a joint on both the supply and return cables offers the possibility of increasing the cable cross-section from 240 mm² Cu to 300 mm² Cu for the sections installed in the technical galleries.
• To clarify this option, the following actions were agreed:
• EN-EL will provide a precises estimate of the CLIC cables lengths Action: D. Gameiro
• EN-EL will provide the exact lengths of the cable segments, based on the proposed joint locations. To facilitate cable pulling, the joints should be positioned as close as possible to the cores on the technical-gallery side. Action: D. Gameiro
• TE-MPE and MCF will recalculate the expected operating resistance for the following configurations:
• Full cable length using 240 mm² Cu conductors.
• Mixed configuration using both 240 mm² Cu and 300 mm² Cu conductors. Action: D. Carrillo, S. Yammine
• To assess the feasibility of connecting 240 mm² Cu and 300 mm² Cu cables, EN-EL will investigate and propose an industrial solution. The study should build on the approach successfully used in the IT String project for joining 300 mm² Class 5 and 300 mm² Class 6 cables, which have different conductor diameters. Action: D. Gameiro
• Should the need for increased cross-section segments be confirmed, a dedicated test and characterization campaign will be organized for the selected solution. Action: D. Carrillo
• Progress updates and validation of the final solution will be presented at a forthcoming MCF topic meeting.

Next Steps

A dedicated MCF topical meeting will be scheduled by the end of June, subject to the progress of the ongoing activities. Action: S. Yammine
