We are developing an experiment to search for the permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of 221Fr. Francium is the heaviest alkali atom, and its simple atomic structure, feasibility of laser cooling, and large relativistic enhancement make it an attractive system for probing CP-violating physics beyond the Standard Model.In our experiment, 221Fr atoms are produced from the alpha decay of 225Ac, neutralized, captured and cooled in a magneto-optical trap (MOT), and will eventually be transferred to an optical lattice for high-precision spectroscopy. At the current stage, we are focusing on the production and evaluation of 221Fr atoms, as well as the development of the first-stage MOT. In this talk, I will introduce the motivation for using 221Fr, our method for producing and evaluation francium atoms, the present status of the experiment, and future prospects toward precision EDM measurements.
