 \nThe author of the new book "Seeing particles: Adventures of an Experimen
 tal Physicist" will give a talk at the CERN Library:\nThis book tells the 
 story of a physicist's sixty years of experimental research into subatomic
  particles\, eventually showing that the quarks that are forever trapped i
 nside protons are smaller than a trillionth trillionth the size of the sma
 llest atom\, hydrogen. The author describes how he and his colleagues made
  many different types of particle detector\, explaining how these enable u
 s to "see" these tiniest constituents of matter\, and how they were used t
 o search for new fundamental particles. He tells the story of his search f
 or the fourth quark\, charm\, and the weak force carriers W and Z\, and ho
 w others found them\, but then he participated in the discovery of the mos
 t massive top quark at Fermilab and the Higgs boson at CERN. His descripti
 ons of the physics are accessible to a general reader\, alongside personal
  stories including some encounters with great physicists.\nThe event will 
 be followed by a Q&A and signing sessions. The book is available from the
  CERN Library & Bookshop.\n\n\nAbout the author: \nMichael Albrow spent
  18 years at CERN from 1969 before becoming a professor at Stockholm Unive
 rsity. He has been at Fermilab since 1991 where he is now a scientist emer
 itus and a member of the CMS collaboration. He is a fellow of the Institut
 e of Physics and the American Physical Society for outreach and education.
  He currently has a "science and art" exhibition at the National Academy o
