es)\nStatistical fluctuations of the net baryon number and electric charge
\nhave been regarded as an excellent diagnostic tool of the chiral phase\n
transition in QCD and in heavy ion collisions [1]. While\nthe second orde
r cumulant exhibits divergence at the critical endpoint\,\nthe higher orde
r cumulants can reveal remnants of the $O(4)$ criticality\nat the chiral
crossover [2].\n\nWe will discuss criticality in the probability distribu
tion of\nconserved charges close to the chiral transition.\nWe calculate
the probability distribution of the net baryon number\n$P(N_B)$ in the c
hiral quark-meson model within the functional renormalization\ngroup meth
od\, and compare its properties to the non-critical\nSkellam function [3\
,4].\n\nWe will show\, that the ratio of $P(N_B)$ to the Skellam distribut
ion\nexhibits a characteristic narrowing which is due to remnants of the
$O(4)$ chiral transition [4].\n\nWe will apply the\nabove analysis to t
he experimental data measured by STAR\ncollaboration\, and show that
STAR data taken at the most central events\nexhibit a similar narrowing a
s found in the model calculations [4]. \n \nWe will indicate a relevan
t reference distribution for the net electric charge fluctuations. We show
that the binomial and negative binomial\ndistribution cannot account for
the characteristic behavior seen in\nthe chiral transition\, and that due
to quantum statistics and multi-charged\nparticle contribution\, the S
kellam distribution is also not a correct baseline for the recent STAR d
