Abstract for Calorimetry Lecture (EIROforum School on Instrumentation, May 28, 2013): The lecture is layed out to be an introduction into calorimetry in high energy physics. The physics of shower development in matter will be reviewed and the energy response of calorimeters will be explained for different types of calorimeters. The challenges of calorimetry in high energy physics experiments such as space requirements, magnetic field, material in front of the calorimeters, radiation and high pile-up will be discussed in some detail together with techniques used to correct for these effects. Some examples of calorimeter systems used in LHC experiments and of those planned for a linear collider will be given and their ways to achieve best possible performance will be illustrated.
