Description
An overview of the fundamental principles of timing and RF reference distribution systems will be given. Then the concept of the universal picosecond timing system developed for the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will be discussed in more detail. Using a prototype of this system, a precision of the time information of 21.2 ps on average was achieved. The short-term jitter exhibits a standard deviation of 7.57 ps. A slightly modified version of the system is already installed at GSI and can be considered as the first running FAIR sub-system. Perspectives for further performance improvement will be presented as well.
