Welcome to CERN to take part in one of the Swiss regional FameLab events 2014!

The FameLab competition started in 2005 from an original idea at the Cheltenham Science Festival. Its purpose is to nurture the communication of science by identifying and training talented young people working in science.

Through an innovative format, FameLab encourages scientists to inspire and excite the public with a vision of 21st century science. It supports these young scientists in developing ideas and presentation skills for broadcast and general audiences.

The goal is to give an entertaining and original 3-minute talk that is scientifically accurate and engaging. 

The Jury of the Geneva regional event is composed by the following members;

- Claude Nicollier - ESA and Swiss astronaut, Swiss Space Center, Solar Impulse EPFL Project
- Yasemin Koc - British Council
- Luis Alvarez-Gaume - CERN Theorist
- Emma Sanders - CERN Science Communicator, author of the LHC pop-up book
- Christophe Ungar - Science journalist at Radio Télévision Suisse

At CERN, the 3-minute talk can be given in French or English. However, the MasterClass, the Swiss final and the International Final are in English only.

7 How Your Brain Makes Choices

I have a Masters degree in Mathematics from Imperial College, London and have been studying behavioural economics/finance in Geneva for the last 3 years. My research has lead me to research neuroscience, which is what I intend to talk about at FameLab. My big hobby is theatre, which I've been doing heavily for the last 4 years. A consummate actor and all-round performer, I've just started writing my own scripts, the first of which will be performed in March in Lausanne. My YouTube channel includes videos where I explain concepts talked about regularly in finance, the most popular of which currently has had just shy of 10,000 views.

My scientific life is shared between research and Education/Outreach. From the Education side: I travel the world to inspire young people with Astronomy through the GalileoMobile programme, convinced that opening their minds to the beauty and grandeur of our Universe (www.galileo-mobile.org) and learning together ""under a same sky"" contributes to a better world. From the Research side: Our group ""Flash & Splash"" at EPFL flies every year onboard parabolic flights of the European Space Agency to unravel the mysteries of cavitation bubbles (bubbles.epfl.ch).

Nuclear Engineer, I work on medical applications of linear accelerators for Tera Foundation at CERN. I am also Cofounder and COO of a web based company in Italy, aiming at helping any aspiring entrepreneur in building his own project. Finally I am part of the Global Shapers Community, an initiative of the World Economic Forum.

12 Catalytic Reactions

I am a Chemical engineer and passionate about contributing to the field of science by continuous learning and offering solutions in making chemical products efficiently.I have worked on several research projects including plant design, catalytic reacting systems and solvent recovery units. Presently, I am completing my Masters in Chemical Engineering at EPFL, Switzerland. My research focuses on developing catalytic reactions and model the reacting system. Having an efficient understanding of these reactions can have a huge application in converting the biomass waste to fuels quickly rather than waiting for several years for biomass to degrade and form fuel reserves.

I am currently finishing my master degree in condensed matter physics at the University of Geneva. All along my studies, I tried to spend some time focusing on teaching and popularizing physics and sciences in general to non-scientists. I am convince it is an important part of a scientist job to be able to share his research! Apart from that, I do not know what you what to know... Talking about life and myself is not an easy task! Especially "in a few words"!
