Description
We present an introduction to the semiconductor nanostructures known as self-assembled quantum dots, which are a promising source of light for the next generation of optical devices. We describe shortly the main ways to obtain these structures, their physical properties and their applications. Then we present the concept of photonic crystal structures, the ways that are commonly used to fabricate them and their use and applications. We show how photonic crystals can be used in conjunction with quantum dots to implement new optical devices based on quantum physics concepts. Some examples of recent research on quantum dots and photonic crystals are discussed.
