On the semiclassical gauge/string correspondence

We explore several aspects of the semiclassical gauge/string correspondence along the lines of the recent proposal of Gubser, Klebanov and Polyakov (hep-th/0204051). We discuss the relation of strings spinning on S(5) and the periodic Sine-Gordon soliton, the stability of strings spinning on AdS(5) and S(5) and the universality class of the QCD-like relation E-S ~ log (S).
