Description
The challenges of precision neutrino physics require measurements of absolute neutrino cross sections at the GeV scale with exquisite (1%) precision. This precision is presently limited to by the uncertainties on neutrino flux at the source. A reduction of this uncertainty by one order of magnitude can be achieved monitoring the positron production in the decay tunnel originating from the K_e3 decays of charged kaons in a sign and momentum selected secondary beam. This novel technique offers unprecedented opportunities for experimental neutrino physics and enables the measurement of the most relevant cross-sections for CP violation with a precision of 1%. In the next five years, this non-conventional approach will be thoroughly investigated in the framework of the ENUBET Project, which has been recently approved by the European Research Council. In this seminar, we will present the opportunities of this technique and the challenges on the proton extraction scheme, the focusing system, the secondary transfer line and the instrumentation of the decay tunnel. Finally, we will discuss the extension of the ENUBET technology to achieve a unique association between the lepton produced in the decay tunnel and the neutrino observed at the detector ("tagged neutrino beams") and a complete ab-initio kinematic reconstruction of the neutrinos produced at source. ATS Seminars Organisers: H. Burkhardt (BE), M. Modena (TE), T. Stora (EN) Coffee / tea will be served after the seminar in room 30/7-012 next to the Auditorium
