Description

The recent establishment of the Stewart Blusson Quantum Materials Institute (SBQMI) is the latest step in a sustained effort to expand this area of research at the University of British Columbia and move to a global level. The founding principle is to balance strengths in materials, theory, and a diverse range of experimental techniques. Above all though, SBQMI is built on collaboration, within the institute, across related initiatives in Canada, and internationally. This overview will offer some insights into the stages taken to get to this point, the vision for taking quantum materials from the laboratory to applications, and the challenges of making rapid progress forwards on this path.
