Description

Preparing LEIR for the HL-LHC Era

Presenter:

Alexander Huschauer -- BE/ABP

Abstract:

The Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR) is at the heart of CERN’s heavy ion physics program and was designed to provide lead ion bunches of high density as required by the experiments at the LHC. The performance of heavy ion beams in LEIR is mainly limited by beam loss occurring during the radio-frequency capture and the first part of acceleration. In the framework of the LHC Injectors Upgrade (LIU) project, these losses have been studied in detail in order to understand the driving mechanism and define mitigation strategies. These activities were crucial to prepare the machine for HL-LHC ion physics after Long Shutdown 2. In this seminar, the LEIR machine is introduced, the current understanding of the loss mechanism is presented and the remaining challenges are discussed.

Coffee will be served before the seminar, at 2.15 p.m.
