Abstract: The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a multi-disciplinary research center based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. This new facility will be around 30 times brighter than today's leading neutron-scattering facilities, enabling new opportunities for researchers in the fields of life sciences, energy, environmental technology, cultural heritage and fundamental physics. ESS will be designed to the highest level of safety in order to meet both the expectations of the users, the personnel and the regulatory requirements. The presentation will give an insight of the challenges to license a completely new facility, located in a populated area, working with the project model of in-kind contributors from all over Europe, a civil constructor contracts and coordination at site in Lund, Sweden. The presentation includes both lessons learned from the past 6 years of desktop work as well as the forthcoming installation field work at site.
