NOTES, WLCG panel discussion, morning session Fri 25 Apr by Tiziana Ferrari ( minimal revision LP ) Other applications interested in pan-European communities? John: yes we have many of them Michel Jouvin: How new VOs are supported if no money for dedicated resource centres? Laura: from the funding agencies, this is an NGI issues, to be seen. Government has to support this activities Jeff: a strong deadline and HEP is the only VO who has the responsibility to guarantee smooth transition as they are the biggest users Michel Jouvin: Biomed is an opportunistic VO, we need communities that are willing to put hw resources laura: in Italy they are provisioned community laura: are there specific tools needed by WLCG? we may have projects where development is still needed Laura: by the end of this year a clear picture of the EGU Organization rool is needed in order to start the transition of soon as possible Jeff: a lot of development happens outside EGEE (for example, SRM) and this is not much used by others Casey: in EGI, how can we push convergence or satisfy the needs for various mw stacks coming from different VOs? Maite: how can WLCG make the operations model sustainable with EGI? is there any other option? Jamie: more automation is needed, but it takes a lot of time to have tools developed and deployed. Does WLCG have enough manpower to ensure that more VOs are taken on board? Jeff T: not WLCG, but EGEE does. John G.: a small EGI Organization can be based on larger countries providing services for the smaller ones. Distribution is important and a group of big NGIs (ROC's) can work as "operation center". Only minimal coordination is needed from external bodies in this way. Coordination can be a responsibility of NGIs, which can chair according to a rota. Not central funding needed in this way. See for example the TPM, which is done volountarily. From the audience a comment: TPM needs coordination anyway. Question from audience: how much money is the EU providing to EGEE operations? John G.: in EGEE the Operation budget is about 16 M Euro; 50% of this is funded directly from the EGEE partners WE can approximately estimate the other 50% is the current EU funding for operations Maite: what can we actually cut in WLCG operations? Jamie: a lot of operations work done by VO people John G.: having a CMS helpdesk, an ATLAS ones, etc. is not good. This is duplication of effort. TALK FROM J.ANDREEVA User interface: from audience --> a comparison of the various possible approches is important Julia: we will do Tiziana: having common hooks in the middleware and convergence at a lower layer, in terms of mechanisms to run sensors, exchange info, and gather information, is very important. Pushing a commong User interface on the other hand will be a challenging think to accomplish, which will hardly make all the users happy Some comments about the real Casey: we need to look at the OGF usage records standards, and where we don't have
