*********Introduction to CDS (basic functionality, revisions, test environment)*********

_____________________

Hello and welcome, this is a introductory video on the CERN document server (CDS).

The CERN Document Server (CDS) IS THE CERN INSTITUTIONAL REPOSITORY and DIGITAL LIBRARY, aN archive of more than 1 million records.

These range from scientific publications of various kinds, administration documents, multimedia files, such as video recordings of lectures and photos from important events.

These records in CDS are grouped into what we call collections, like these ones.
Each record can contain one or several files.

So the hierarchy goes like this:

((((SHOW HIERARCHY))))

=================

At the top, you have the Tabs.

The first one for searching for documents. You can use an advanced search which allows to filter your search based o specific criteria.

Then you have the Submit Tab, where you will have to choose the type of document you want to submit, for example a CERN Thesis, insert the relevant information and submit your document.

Then you can use the Help Tab for more details on the search and submit functions, along with tips to refine your search.

Finally, on the last Tab you can personalize your searches, groups documents into “baskets”, look at a list of all your previous comments, a list of all your previous searches and set up alerts for when somebody uploads a document related to a search you made, among others.

=================

==================

If you are searching for a document, You can use the boolean operators AND, NOT, OR.

Simply writing “climate change” will give the same results than typing climate AND change.
The results of the search will show records containing both words.

Then you can type “climate NOT change”, for records that contain the word “climate”, but not the word “change”

You can type “climate OR warming” for records that contain at least one of the words.

You can also search for specific phrases, for example, to search for documents written by certain authors such as “Ellis, J”. to do this, put the exact phrase in quotes, like this:

"Ellis, J"

If you want to look for a phrase even if there is other text right before or after the phrase, put the phrase in single quotes, like this:

'muon decay'

For a more detailed interface to search for your document, you can click on “advanced search”.

Select whether you want to search for words or a specific phrase for example, select the field, for example in the title, and you can add more words or phrases using the boolead operators.

For more tips and a more detailed guide to other search fonctionalities, for example on special characters, please take a look at the “Search guide” page, under the Help Tab.

Lets navigate in some CDS collections as examples.

<—— Click on the e-learning tutorials’ collection ——>

The e-learning modules is an example of a collection.

And these are are examples of records inside a collection.

The owners of the collections may request the CDS supporters to personalize the collection by displaying their names, logos, contact informations and their mandate.

<—— Click on the record ——>

On this page you can see the relevant information for the record such as the authors and a description. And at your right you can see the number of users who viewed the record.

Please observe the discussion tab, where viewers can add comments about the record.
By inserting some text and by clicking on “add comment“.

As you can see, there is some input already here {{{SHOW ON THE SCREEN}}}

********Another example is the Photos collection, when you can see an example of a file inside a record.

An important thing about CDS is that, as THE CERN institutional repository, there is no deletion of documents. Instead, these documents are simply modified, revised.

Users should never try to delete a document if they make a mistake, they should instead simply revise the previous version of the same document by using the revise function.
To know more about the revise function, please see our “how to submit a document on CDS” tutorial

If you simply would like to do a test in order to see how CDS works, it is advisable to use the CDS test environment as opposed to this CDS production environment.
You can find this test environment at this URL.

Thank you for your attention, and see you in the next tutorial!
