Description

The Extreme Energy Events (EEE) project is a cosmic ray physics experiment and at the same time an excellent outreach project. Its scientific goal is the study of extended air showers from high energy cosmic rays and extreme energy events by detecting the muon component of the shower. To this aim, a network of muon telescopes has been installed in high schools distributed all over Italy. The project was conceived in order to interest high school students in science and give them a hands-on experience of scientific research. The students are involved in all stages of the project: construction of the muon detectors - Multigap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs) – at CERN, installation, setting up and commissioning of the telescopes in their schools, study of the performance of the detectors, data-taking and analysis. At this moment ~50 stations take data during coordinated runs which last the whole academic year; more than 70 billion tracks have been collected and a number of physics results have been published.
