Description

Abstract:
Neutron spectrum measurements have been carried out at the CHARM/CSBF mixed-field facility, generating a radiation field through the interaction of a 24 GeV/c proton with a copper target. By employing several type of neutron detectors such as a liquid scintillator, Bonner spheres and activation foils, we successfully obtained neutron spectra measurements and reaction rates for a broad range of shielding thicknesses and materials. The measured spectra and reaction rates were compared with those obtained through Monte-Calro simulations to evaluate models for production and transport. This lecture will cover outlines of the experiment, neutron detectors, simulation and results; also providing a link to secondary particle evaluation on damage studies.

Short biography of the speaker:
Toshiya Sanami is a professor of the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) in Japan. He obtained his doctoral degree in nuclear engineering at Tohoku University, Sendai, in 1999 for studies of secondary particle detectors and their application. He has been a staff member of the radiation science center in KEK, Japan since 1999. He was also a staff member of radiation protection in the Stanford linear accelerator (SLAC) center from 2006 to 2007. Currently he is working on the radiation shielding design of KEK electron accelerators and conducting experiments measuring secondary particles from high energy induced reactions as well as detector development for the experiment.
