Communications

Report on the LIU Project meeting of the 2^nd of November 2017.

• Reliability run ongoing for Linac4. As the present source is not delivering the specified current within the acceptance of the RFQ, it has been suggested to design a new RFQ with an increased acceptance. It is very important to check that this does not pose any problems downstream at PSB injection.

Report on meeting with STI:

• The EDMS document 1578463 concerning the scraper is currently under approval. STI have stated at the meeting that they need this document to be fully approved and be sure that the specifications do not change anymore.

Report on meeting with BE space manager:

• Building 141 is entirely needed for the new cooling plant, managed by G. Petrika. Half of this space is currently used by BE-RF, managed by M. Haase. In order to make place for the cooling plant the RF equipment needs to be relocated to another area, which has not been found yet. G. Petrika commented that if the building 141 cannot be cleared they will only use building 237, which introduces a delay in the deadline. No solution has been provided by the BE space manager so far. The other half of bldg. 141 is presently used by EN as storage space. The EN space manager has been contacted.

Follow-up on open actions

T. Dobers (2017-10-24): Change the value of the wide band pick-up in Geode to the one given by the 3D scan.

• He will do the changes this week, as the problem with the GEODE database is now solved. Deadline extended to 2017-11-21.

T. Dobers (2017-10-31): Make a list of starting points of the transfer lines to be sent for approval in an EDMS document.

• Deadline extended to 2017-12-02.

C. Hessler (2017-11-07): Send the new MAD-X file to I. Efthymiopoulos and T. Birtwistle for the upgrade of the LIU-PSB and current MAD-X optics, and the layout database.

• Presented at this meeting. Action closed.

K. Hanke (2017-10-24): Find space to store the material for the Finemet cavities installation. In progress

• Deadline extended to 2017-11-21.

G. Petrika (2017-10-31): Iterate with integration on the installation of the new piping system for cooling.

• This has already been presented at the integration meeting but two scenarios have been rejected. A third option was proposed, integrated as a 3D model. They are currently waiting for approval from EN-HE. An update will be presented at the next meeting. Deadline extended to 2017-11-21.

Support girders for equipment in the BTP (Benoit Riffaud)

The set-up will consist of individual supports and girders which can serve for several components, each of them individually adjustable. It needs to be decided for  which equipment individual supports are needed, and which components can be mounted on common girders.

Comments

• B. Riffaud asked about the strategy to support the quadrupoles. A. Newborough answered that the support will depend on each magnet. He added that he would exclude any equipment aligned on the girder because of loss of flexibility.
• K. Hanke suggested to meet and iterate with T. Dobers, make a proposal and present at the next meeting.

PS Complex Layout Database Refurbishment and Post-LS2 Version (Thomas Birtwistle)

• The goal of the Configuration Management at CERN is to provide a clear and coherent picture of a project or facility at a given point in time.
• The layout database contains functional position names, which stores equipment linked to the NORMA, EDMS and MTF databases.
• The functional positions of the magnets are taken from data given by ABP, according to the optics sequence files.
• In order to account for non-standard cases, such as a magnet with a non-centered iron, the offset between the mechanical and optical middle will be stored in the layout database. For this, the mechanical start, middle, and end of the magnet will be added to the database.
• They are currently working on a STUDY version of the layout database, the aim is to also keep the existing functionality.
• The data flow will be the following:
  • A MAD-X sequence with the mechanical and beam offsets will be generated with the layout database and the MAD-X sequence data.
  • A MAD-X simulation will be done using this sequence, giving TWISS and SURVEY files as output.
  • The SURVEY file will be sent to the survey database, which will give back information about the misalignments.
  • The misalignments will be then integrated into the sequence.
• The post LS2 version is based on ECRs and will be ready by January 2018, done by T. Prins.

Comments

• B. Mikulec asked if there is a way to be notified every time the survey database is updated with new misalignments. I. Efthymiopoulos answered that realignments are done on demand. B. Mikulec agreed, but pointed out that the time of the demand and the time of the update might be very different. It was suggested to implement a notification system for this.

Injector Optics Repository - Status Update (Ilias Efthymiopoulos)

• BE-ABP maintains the optics files repositories:
  • The old webpage is still maintained since information has to be migrated.
  • The official repository is on GitLab and should be the reference for the officially released files.
  • The files can also be found in EOS :/eos/user/i/ijnopt/InjectorOptics
• GitLab offers an easy way for identified developers to contribute to the project. The distribution of local copies is not encouraged.
• The 2017 optics are currently available on GitLab and the optics from other years will be added gradually. There will be a branch and a tag for each year.
• Concerning the post-LIU optics, I. Efthymiopoulos received a file as PTC tracking input from J-B. Lagrange. This needs to be converted to MAD-X and verified against the latest layout changes. The transfer line files were sent by C. Hessler.
• An EDMS document is currently in preparation to define the start and end of the lines with T. Birtwistle and T. Dobers. This reference will be used in all MAD-X files.

Comments

• I. Efthymiopoulos commented that it is very difficult to transform the PTC file. B. Mikulec asked V. Forte if there is MAD-X file for the future injection. V. Forte answered that there is one, but that it is not complete.
• C. Hessler commented that the optics file for the transfer lines has been cleaned up and adapted to I. Efthymiopoulos’ file structure. Some apertures are missing because they are still undefined, such as the ones of the vacuum chambers. The new beam stopper is still not reflected in the files. The integration with the BTM line is not done yet.
• B. Mikulec asked about the origin of the magnetic length data. A. Newborough answered that they are taken from the old magnetic measurements done by O. Berrig and added that these lengths might not be correct in the NORMA database.
• B. Mikulec commented that it would be very important to make a list of all the elements installed with the information of magnetic measurements so that we have a correct description of the machine. The data requested by OP was stated in a meeting on April 2017 with A. Milanese, namely:
  • Peak current.
  • Maximum RMS current.
  • Magnetic length.
  • Measurement of the transfer function: a table describing the relation between BL and current.
