Abstract:

Hybrid pixel detectors provide noise hit free images of ionising radiation by combining various detector types (semiconductor, gas, MCP) with pixel readout chips. The Medipix chips permit frame-based energy sensitive particle counting. Medipix2 and Medipix3 have been used in a number of imaging applications including beam halo monitoring at UA9. The Timepix chips permit time tagging of individual particle hits and the most recent Timepix3 chip provides data driven (rather than frame-based) readout. This talk will introduce hybrid pixel detector technology, describe the various readout chips and cover some applications in beam monitoring and instrumentation. A live demonstration of particle detection will be included.
