Description

The measurement of antiproton in cosmic rays has reached an unprecedented precision, in particular thanks to AMS-02 on the International Space Station. The interpretation of this data requires a careful prediction of the antiproton source term, which relies on the production cross-section of antiprotons from incoming p and He in the cosmic rays scattering on H and He of the interstellar medium.

The LHCb Collaboration has measured for the first time the inclusive antiproton production cross section for the p-He channel, using the LHC proton beam at 6.5 TeV energy and a fixed Helium target in the SMOG device. We discuss the results of this measurement as well as the requirements on further data in order to predict the antiproton source term with a precision comparable to the data collected in space.
