Update on the heating system removal intervention in the PSB tunnel (Gabor Petrika)

During the last technical stop the risks associated with removing the heating system were identified. These risks are related to dust, water, contamination, and material handling.

Dust

• There is a thick layer of dust everywhere, including the pipes. The dust will be removed before the intervention after having been checked for activation.
• A dedicated team will be needed to remove the insulation.

Water

• Water dripping and water spills below 0.1 l are expected.
• The water is contaminated by a limited amount of asbestos, which is manageable. The water will be treated as waste and collected separately.

Material handling

• The machine needs to be protected against falling parts and objects. Two methods are available:
  • Use a scaffolding structure to provide access to the area and protect the machine at the same time. During the YETS the scaffolding is only available in the transfer zones.
  • Use a mobile platform that could be manually moved, available for LS2.

A pilot project was proposed to gain experience removing the heating system. It will consist of removing several heating units in the transfer area during the second or third week of the YETS. Two options are proposed using the scaffolding structure:

• Removing 6 units using 6 people in 2 weeks.
• Removing all 16 units with 16 people in 6 weeks. This option will make the intervention in LS2 only two weeks shorter.

The first option was chosen as in LS2 there will be better access and machine protection, while only two weeks will be gained with the second option.

Comments

• B. Mikulec commented that there might be kicker tests during the YETS that could influence the second option. If the rest of the heaters can be removed during LS2 without influencing the dismantling of the lines, then the first option is recommended.

Building 245 – État général travaux génie civil (Helena Botella Esteban)

Modifications derived from the explosion studies

• Finished: openings in the concrete façade.
• Ongoing: deviation of rainwater collection.

• Future: insulation, installation of an internal frame in the capacitors room and reinforcement of the floor of the basement.

Control room

• Looking for a water supply for the bathroom.

Basement room

• Finished: walls and paint.
• Future: wooden doors with acoustic insulation.

Others

• Finished: buffer insulation in the basement, cladding openings for CV.
• Ongoing: order has been placed for blast doors.
• Future: additional openings in concrete for CV (air conditioning).

The cost has increased by 20 kCHF due to the explosion studies, the total cost being 310 kCHF. The modifications of building 245 are expected to be completed by February-March 2018, which does not impact the related activities in that building.

Comment

• D. Carloni asked if the fences needed on the ground floor are included in the cost increase. H. Botella Esteban answered that she did not know.

New action Fulvio Boattini (2017-12-05): follow-up of the tip over the issue concerning the installation of the power converters in building 245.

EVM PSB Update (Sylvie Prodon)

• The cost variance is positive, which is explained by unreported work from RF.
• The project is 2.7 months behind the cost and schedule review baseline. This delay will be explained to the council in the following way:
  • Grouping together power converters, cooling and ventilation, civil engineering and installation, transport and handling due to the modifications in the 245 building.
  • The second big contributor is ABT.
  • The third contributor are vacuum and electrical systems.
  • For the rest of the work packages, the variances are small.
• There are some big schedule variances that are probably due to lack of reporting.
• Regarding the CERN Expenditure Tracking for the LIU-PSB project, there is currently 71% of charges and 98% of commitment versus the 74% of charges and 96% commitment objectives for the 1st of December 2017.

4.4 Tour de table

• T. Dobers will prepare the EDMS document concerning the unification of starting points of the machine in the optics and databases.
• D. Carloni commented that he met with C. Zamantzas, who implemented a control measure in the BLM instrumentation to prevent electrical arcs from the magnets. He asked if the risk of an electrical arc is possible due to high voltage equipment in general, which is all around the machine, and if someone from the control room could power the magnets during instrumentation activities. A. Newborough commented that the magnets are insulated up until 10 kV but people should not be in the machine while the magnets are on. This topic will be included on the agenda of the CSAP meeting.
• T. Birtwistle asked if the SEMGRIDs will be installed during the YETS. J. A. Ferreira Somoza answered that the chances are slim. J. Tan will follow-up the topic with C. Vuitton.
• J. Tan commented that they will have a review concerning the profile monitors. The installation of the wire scanners and the tune pick-up are in the YETS pipeline.
• G. P. Di Giovanni reported that the interlock system EDMS document 1715266 is finally released. B. Mikulec commented that the document concerning the implementation will be written next year.
• G. Guidoboni reported that the reliability run is progressing.
• F. Schmidt commented that together with A. Newborough they are planning measurements in the SPS concerning the damping resistors.

Next LIU-PSB meeting: 5^th of December on the B-train measurements (Marco Buzio). Last meeting of the year with Xmas drinks.
