Several anomalies in short-baseline oscillations have been interpreted as possible hints for the existence of eV-scale sterile neutrinos. In the first part of this talk, we critically review these hints and use comprehensive global fits to reveal substantial tension in the global data set. We then comment on cosmological constraints on light sterile neutrinos, and on ways to avoid them. In the final part of the talk, we address the possible impact of light sterile neutrinos on direct and indirect dark matter searches.
