Pinning down Uncertainties in Cosmic Ray Propagation

AMS-02 has reached unprecedented sensitivity in the detection of cosmic rays and further pushed the desire to probe dark matter via indirect detection. Due to the high precision of the data, uncertainties in the astrophysical background have become the most limiting factor. I want to discuss the production of boron and its important role for investigating the propagation of charged cosmic rays. Cross section uncertainties are determined from a wide collection of accelerator data and are—for the first time ever—fully taken into account. In our work we further systematically quantify and—where possible—reduce uncertainties in the antiproton background. This allows us to constrain even subdominant dark matter signals through their spectral properties. However, I also want to discuss the reliability of the assumptions that need to be made in order to hunt for dark matter signals in charged cosmic rays.
