Description

The pattern of masses and mixings of known matter presents acute hierarchies. The Standard Model does not account for these and a deeper explanation of this pattern is a longstanding and outstanding problem, the flavour puzzle. Two symmetry-based solutions to this puzzle will be presented; one will be the spontaneous breaking of the largest flavour symmetry that the matter content can afford while the other will be based on the clockwork mechanism. It will be shown how the latter, although not obviously a symmetry-based solution, is indeed connected to a new class of Froggatt-Nielsen models.
