1 – Irradiation –Richard

The irradiation at CLEAR is expected to take place during a weekend, as we can use the CLEAR facility in a parasitic mode when it is not used for another purpose. Imran will prepare the connectors and cables to connect the electronics. We will get the FPGAs from Heidelberg. Richard & Imram will come at the CERN to run the test, from Friday to Sunday, in order to get the maximum out of this test.

Richard talked to our colleagues in Lubjana regarding neutron irradiation. For this we do not need a working chip just to investigate how much activated it has been in order to plan the campain, knowing how much time we need to reach the level of activation required to ship the chip back. One or two chips is enough.

2 –Demonstrator –Richard, Cedric

Richard is negotiating with Heinz Perreneger to have a demonstration of the connection of the wireless transceiver to the detector readout system. There are 2 motivations. One is the demonstration of the detector readout with the transceiver. The other one is to have CERN involved in this activity ; this would be a benefit for the project in the long term. One sould explain to Heinz how one would interface this transceiver board to a typical readout system. The data from the detector might be LVDS at a frequency of about 160 MHz. The idea is to replace the cable for the data link with the transceiver and to collect the signal and transmit it to the readout system through the receiver, in order to test the transmission with and without the transceiver in between. Probably the most efficient way to proceed would be to propose a connection scheme. Cedric has already sent the data sheets from ST to Heinz, and the first step could be to exchange about this document in order to determine if the two boards can directly communicate or if something is needed in between to make them communicate. The difficulty should come from the protocole. Ideally the best would be to simply replace the cable with our system, without needing to worry about the data format. In principle LVDS is a common format, but this has to be checked. If the data rate from the detector is low we may have to mix it with another signal to get up the frequency ; for this the expertise of Sebastian on FPGA would be necessary. This will be followed by Richard & Elizabeth with Heinz. Although we have no detailled knowledge on the chip from ST, it is important to make this demonstration, as nobody has ever shown that RF transmission may work for HEP.

3 – Project submission to ATTRACT –All

We started a common project with irradiation, and this should be expanded with Heinz’s group. In case we do not manage to get this group into the project, we still have the possibility to readout a detector either in Uppsala or in Heidelberg. However the collaboration with Heinz would be extremely benificial to our activity. ALICE is also very interested for their inner tracker ; Hans-Kristian will follow up with them. The question we have to answer is how to make relevant our project for the ATTRACT call, in terms of industrial and societal benefits, what is the added value our activity brings to the field. Our specificity is the number of links to manage, as it would be needed in future data center, where 60 GHz is expected to be used for this purpose. One interesting application is in « white room » areas which have to be extra clean in order to avoid contamination. Another application is the test of satellites inside vacuum chambers, as they want to export the data from the satellite to the outside of the vacuum chamber. What about the budget breakdown ? In principle this should come naturally when we have a plan. Elizabeth proposes to send the page describing criteria to fulfill in order to get everyone input, and she will make a synthesis, adding also parts we have already written.

4 – VERTEX 2018

As Imran will not be able to go to this conference. Richard’s agenda being full and, with the beam test coming, he is unable to go as well. Cedric was invited to go but he has to ask for permission, as this conference is not part of their listed major conferences. If we find no speaker, we will have to cancel our participation.

3 – AOB –Cédric

The chip we have tested is now developing for mass production. ST has decided to modify the emitter in order to have a better range ; we will gain between 5 and 8 dB. Then the chip will have a higher power consumption but a better range (~ 10 cm).
