Abstract We develop a new method to determine flavor symmetries within compactified string theory. A picture emerges where traditional (discrete) flavor symmetries, CP-like symmetries and modular symmetries combine to a unified flavor group. We observe the phenomenon of "local" flavor symmetries (with non-universality for various sectors of the theory) that opens up a new arena for flavor model building.
