Idea Circle Dinner Discussion #3:

S’Cool LAB: From hands-on learning activities to questionnaires and escape games

Abstract:

S’Cool LAB (cern.ch/s-cool-lab) is a Physics Education Research facility at CERN. It offers high school students and their teachers the chance to take part in hands-on & minds-on particle physics experiment sessions while, at the same time, taking part in physics education research projects. Participating in S'Cool LAB activities enables teachers to give their students a glimpse of life and work in a world-leading international research institute. By getting hands-on with physics in S'Cool LAB, students can make discoveries independently, learn to work scientifically and apply their knowledge in a new setting. Students also have the chance to engage directly with members of CERN's scientific community.

In this session, I will briefly introduce S’Cool LAB and its offers, highlight interesting results of my PhD research project, and tell you my favourite fun facts.

About the speaker:

Julia Woithe:

Julia (cern.ch/julia.woithe) is a senior fellow managing S'Cool LAB, CERN's hands-on particle physics learning laboratory for high-school students, and investigating cognitive and affective effects of hands-on learning opportunities. After studying physics, mathematics, and education at the University of Dresden, Germany, Julia started her PhD studies in physics education research at CERN in cooperation with the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany and the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Her current (research) interests include students’ conceptions in particle physics, low-cost 3D-printable particle physics experiments, educational escape games, and science identities.

Idea Circle Dinner Discussion Series:

If you are interested in learning more about education, communication and outreach activities at CERN, we have launched a new series of talks specifically targeting CERN personnel looking to improve their communication skills, engage with the public, and network with experts in the field. The lecture and discussion series, named Idea Circle Dinner Discussions, will be held at IdeaSquare every other Wednesday at 18:00. Spaces are limited, so please register today to reserve your seat. (Light dinner and refreshments will be available for registered participants only).

ICDD events are scheduled at the following times:

  • ICDD#1: Wednesday 20 Mar 6PM - 7PM
  • ICDD#2: Wednesday 03 Apr 6PM - 7PM
