Get A Kick Out Of Learning - CERN Media Lab's Engagement Strategies

Interactive applications are a powerful way to engage audiences and accelerate the learning of specific topics. They can be used in science centres, classrooms and special events to complement more traditional outreach techniques. At the CERN Media Lab, we research the technical and behavioural potential of this approach and conceive interactive installations that explore its educational possibilities.

In this presentation, we will have a peek into the principles, the technology, the projects, the context and scope, and hints about what will come in the future.

About the speaker:

Joao Pequenao:

Joao is the chief troublemaker at the CERN Media Lab. He has a background in physics but spends most of his professional time conceiving interactive applications for science visualisation and education. Over the years, his 3D animations, simulation images and scientific illustrations have frequently been featured in several major media outlets worldwide. His main approach for science communication is the creation of visual and personalized metaphors for complex scientific concepts.

Joao has been key in establishing state-of-the-art multimedia installations for science centres and visit points at top research institutions worldwide. He regularly collaborates with artists developing science-inspired pieces, coaches scientists on public outreach, and mentors many students. One of his big side projects is “Phantom of the Universe” (, an award-winning planetarium show about Dark Matter viewed by over 5 million people in more than 500 planetariums in 72 countries.

Idea Circle Dinner Discussion Series:

If you are interested in learning more about education, communication and outreach activities at CERN, we have launched a new series of talks specifically targeting CERN personnel looking to improve their communication skills, engage with the public, and network with experts in the field. The lecture and discussion series, named Idea Circle Dinner Discussions, will be held at IdeaSquare every other Wednesday at 18:00. Spaces are limited, so please register today to reserve your seat. (Light dinner and refreshments will be available for registered participants only).
