USATLAS/FIRST-HEP Computing Bootcamp
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
This bootcamp is a collaboration between USATLAS and the IRIS-HEP/FIRST-HEP foundation and is intended to educate newcomers to ATLAS, in particular graduate students, about a number of core technical computing concepts and tools used within ATLAS and more widely in the HEP. The program will be hosted at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from August 19-23.
Financial support is available and can be requested by registering for the event and completing the following request form - Link to Financial Request Form. (After registering, please fill this out if you wish to attend! We want to make it as easy as possible for all interested individuals to attend!) Requests for financial assistance will be reviewed starting on July 1.
Logistical Information for Travel
There are three major international airports that serve the Bay Area: San Francisco International Airport (SFO), Oakland International Airport (OAK), and San Jose International Airport (SJC). There are many direct flights from major US cities to these airports. Unfortunately, there are no direct flights to CERN, but there are direct flights to Frankfurt and Zurich (United/Lufthansa), Paris and Amsterdam (Delta/KLM), and London (American/British).
The cheapest way to get from OAK or SFO to Berkeley is via BART. It will take between 30-45 min from OAK and about an hour from SFO. Downtown Berkeley is the BART stop closest to the lab and there is a shuttle (the Blue shuttle) that runs about every 15 minutes from the BART stop to the lab. The shuttle is free, but you need to show the shuttle pass that you will be sent just before the workshop.
There are many hotel options in the Berkeley area and you will find many possibilities with Airbnb as well. The most convenient option is to stay directly at the lab at the Berkeley Guest house (there is also no better view of the Bay). The rate is $145/night and is a 2 min walk from the workshop venue. If you are interested in this option, please email our administrator Quanita Johnson-Benjamin <qljohnson@lbl.gov> (and cc samuel.meehan@cern.ch). The sooner you do this, the more likely it is that there will be availability. If you stay in Berkeley (or elsewhere), you can take the shuttle to the lab every morning and back down every evening. It is also possible to walk from Downtown Berkeley (~30-45 min walk) through the university campus but there is a very steep hill (though the walk is nice).
