Student feedback

Refer to the slides for the details. We refer to them in the bullets below.

  • Markus : proposal to have the application form in Indico -> investigate with future possible administrative helper. Barth has already made some tests.
  • Lack of big picture : Markus : during the preparation for the school we kind of forgot to bring the lectures in the right order. Proposal to have, next year, a lecture "introduction to the program" 20 min-30 min or even 45 min. Relate the lectures to the block diagram. Rescope one of the overview talk of the first day ?
  • Adam : we could have a document to introduce the program. People think it might not be read by the users.
  • Francesca : Proposal to make a lecture about a small experiment to introduce all the concepts.
  • Adam : Proposal to add a wrap up lecture.
  • Barth : Proposal to have a survey on every lecture and labs. Open it the first day. OK.
  • We agree to distribute the female students randomly. We make the groups by alphabet.
  • Manoel: Uncomfortable having economy and business rooms. Avoid having this type of differences, it is bad for a school. We would keep the possibility to have a single if possible.
  • Machine Learning : Markus says that it is maybe more for CSC. People say that it is used in trigger. We can have a lecturer/speaker. See next year.
  • Start on time ! we agree. Will : we were flexible due to lack of bathroom in accommodations.
  • Lab books : please update already now. Of course some times the labs evolve during the school due to feedback.
  • Francesca : is there a better way to collect the material ? it was very long. And in word. Markus: global word file? Francesca : we need git. Fabrice: latex ? We agree on a common document editable by many at the same time. Sharepoint ? confluence ? Google document.
  • Choose which labs : no
  • China/India : Yes but no. Franchising ?

Staff feedback

  • Adam: divide lectures in two categories : mentoring in DAQ/didactic vs informative lectures. More mentoring.
Markus: write some criteria to help judge their lecture in terms of mentoring.
Agreement that lectures could be a mix. Students should learn how to do things but it is not obvious how to make lectures this way.
Remind people the aim of the lectures. Francesca : make a survey amongst us ? put it on hold.
  • Adam: General activities: most of the activities were on the second week. It should rather be on the first week to break ice.
  • Francesca: lectures should be shorter to leave time for questions and discussions. We should encourage students to discuss during coffee breaks and during lunches. It is true that there is no time for question as lecture is 1 h in a 1h slot. Will: panel of 4/5 people who evaluated the lecture. Shrink 5 minutes everyone ! Remind also the lecturers before next edition tha tit hsould be 50-55 minutes.
  • Enrico: stress the point that the general picture is lacking and in the first talks there are redundancy.
  • Markus: categorize the lectures : overview, technology, special interest. -> encourage lecturers of a certain group to have a meeting to harmonize.
  • Will: change the balance between lab and lecture : have more labs. People do not agree because it is too heavy for students and tutors.
  • Markus: programming skills of the students ? ask students to do homework ?
People fear that students won't do it. Then it should be mandatory. Hannes thought that they were better or at least as good/bad as last years. Markus also think that there was no problem with the programming skills. Gianluca : the level was enough for lab 14.
  • 2020 : Spain. January. Valencia. We contacted 15 other institutes.

Action list

--> Action 1: Have a lecture to give the big picture and introduce the program. Resize some other lectures to fit it in and avoid duplication.

--> Action 2: Have a lecture at the end of the program to wrap up the program.

--> Action 3: Have the survey opened the first day to evaluate every single lecture and lab.

--> Action 4: Distribute the female students randomly. We make the groups by alphabet.

--> Action 5: Consider a ML lecture for next year.

--> Action 6: Start lectures sharp on time (if there are no exceptional circomstances)

--> Action 7: Lab book: Use a common document editable by many at the same time, such as Google Doc.

--> Action 8: Make sure that social activities happen also, if not in majority, during the first week.

--> Action 9: Remind lecturers that the aim is to have a mix of mentoring lectures and informative lectures. Also that it should be 5-10 minutes shorter to let time for questions.

--> Action 10: We should categorize the lectures : overview, technology, special interest. We can then encourage lecturers of a certain group to have a meeting to harmonize their lectures.
