Description

This is a one-week lecture course (10 hours, in English) on Classical and Quantum Integrable Systems. The course is given by Alessandro Torrielli, and takes place at Instituto Galego de Física de Altas Enerxías (IGFAE) in Santiago de Compostela.

Deadline for registration: 31 August

Integrable systems are a special category of classical and quantum dynamical systems which admit a large number of conserved quantities in involution. This allows to employ powerful algebraic methods to find the exact solution to the dynamical problem. Integrability has a great relevance for physics, not only because it provides a testing ground for our understanding of complicated many-body systems via exactly solvable examples, but also due to its applications in condensed matter theory, water waves, high-energy physics and string theory. The beauty of the methods of the classical and quantum inverse scattering connect to branches of mathematics such as Lie bialgebras and quantum groups, noncommutative algebra and knot theory, and makes the theory of integrable models a milestone development of mathematical physics.

Alessandro Torrielli is Reader at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Surrey (UK). He got his PhD in 2003 from the University of Padova (Italy), and later he carried out his research activity also at Humboldt University (Berlin, Germany), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT, USA), Utrecht University (The Netherlands), University of York (UK). He is interested in the theory of integrable systems and quantum groups, especially the ones that emerge in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence.
