Preamble

The 4th Workshop on a transmutator, based on liquid operation and laser-driven neutrons following the concept of Tajima and Mourou, aims at continuing the work started a year ago when the first workshop was called. In the last Workshop we formed a scientific informal consortium consisted of four Pillars. Since then the Hungarian Government generously addressed a grant of 10M€ order to address the most critical scientific and engineering issues of a laser based transmutator. In April an MoU was also signed by École Polytechnique, TAE Technologies, and University of Szeged, Hungary, establishing a framework for collaborative efforts towards a preparatory phase execution.

At this workshop we will survey the work progress in the 4 Pillars (Pillar 1: laser-driven neutron source; Pillar 2: Neutronics; Pillar 3: Transmutator first wall materials; Pillar 4: Chemistry) as well as discuss on the near future steps such as proof-of-principle experiments. We also aim at identifying and prioritizing the most urgent steps and discuss the possibilities for future funds and strengthening and increasing the memberships.
