Description
As part of a specialized LHC maintenance tool-kit, CERN has recently acquired a specifically designed and purpose built industrial Mobile X-Ray Computer Tomograph for the detection and diagnosis of anomalies within the interconnect zones between the LHC Main-Ring magnets. After an introduction to industrial computed tomography and some of its typical applications we will turn to the mobile system now operational at CERN. We will highlight the main purposes of the machine, the main factors that have influenced its design and constrained its performance and we will see how it is to be exploited to obtain diagnostics in the LHC tunnel. We will examine a selection of output that has been obtained from the system, in terms of X-Ray pictures and reconstructed images of the defined areas of interest in the LHC Main-ring magnet interconnect zones. To conclude, we will touch upon ways in which the Mobile X-ray Tomograph could be exploited on the surface, during periods where it is not required in the LHC tunnel.
