CERN continuously monitors the evolution of the situation concerning the novel coronavirus COVID-19 in consultation with the relevant Host States authorities, the World Health Organization (WHO), and other intergovernmental organisations in Geneva and sets precautionary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its personnel, visitors and the citizens in the region.

As part of these measures, we regret to announce that the FLUKA School originally scheduled for March 16-20 has to be postponed. We presently target June 2020 as tentative new period, to be confirmed at a later stage depending on the evolution of the situation.

This school will offer students and professionals working on radiation physics problems a beginner's introduction to the various functions and attributes of FLUKA, a general-purpose code for the Monte Carlo simulation of radiation transport in complex material geometries. The course will also introduce the functionalities of the completely revised user interface Flair3.

The event is hosted at CERN, from Monday March 16 (starting 9 AM) until Friday March 20 (ending at lunch time), 2020.

Course fee

The registration fee is of 150 CHF.

There is an additional fee of 350 CHF for commercial users.

Included in the registration fee are the coffee breaks and one social dinner.

The school programme includes a visit/tour of CERN.

The fee does not include accommodation (see below).

Registration process

Registration can be started by filling and submitting the registration form.

Several payment options exist:

  • Direct credit card payment through the registration site. Keep in mind that, for credit card payments, the credit-card companies charge a processing fee of about 2.5% (Visa and Mastercard) or about 3.7% (American Express).
  • Bank transfer: please contact the secretariat of the course and arrangements will be made.
  • CERN participants: contact the secretariat of the course.

Registration is considered complete only after proof of payment is received. In case of anticipated payment delay, contact the organizers as soon as possible.

Like all previous courses, the number of participants is limited to 30 participants. Acceptance will be on a first come / first served basis. In case the limit on the number of participants is exceeded during the registration stage, a waiting list will be set up.

Please make arrangements for payment as soon as you get the respective details, the latest by February 21, 2020. After this date, if any of the accepted registrations are not yet completed by the corresponding fee payment (see below), people from the waiting list will be allowed to proceed in turn through the fee payment to validate their registration.

Accommodation is NOT included in the course fee.

We have, however, made a pre-booking of 15 rooms at the CERN Hostel valid either until February 15, 2020, or until filled (whichever occurs first). The costs are to be covered by the participant. Please follow the instructions in this form.

Prior Knowledge

No particular experience with FLUKA or similar Monte-Carlo packages is required, however basic knowledge of LINUX/UNIX is necessary, as well as reasonably fluent use of a plain-text editor and the ability to navigate through a file tree. For newcomers, not only to FLUKA but also to Linux, we strongly recommend to have a look into a Linux tutorial (in particular sections 1 to 5 of the outline) in order to be able to profit at maximum from the FLUKA course.

Participants are expected to come with their own laptop, having verified beforehand that FLUKA 2011.3.0 and Flair 3.0 have been installed under either Linux or Windows (WSL) and are up and running. Instructions will follow.

Application for this event is currently open.
