1 Insights in the Liquid Argon TPC Detecting Technique

Liquid argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr-TPC) detectors, conceived at the beginning of the 80’s, have demonstrated to be excellent tools for the experimental search of rare events, and are the leading technique for studying neutrino oscillations in the US in the near to mid-term future.
The Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program at Fermilab exploits three such detectors exposed to the Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB) at different baselines with the goal of delivering a rich and compelling physics opportunity, including the ability to perform the most sensitive search to date for sterile neutrinos at the eV mass-scale through both appearance and disappearance oscillation channels.
At the same time, R&D efforts are ongoing to keep improving the performance of LAr-TPC's, for instance by lowering the energy threshold of the ionisation tracking down to the tens-of-keV scale, such to make them sensitive to the nuclear recoil processes relevant in searches for dark matter or coherent neutrino scattering.
