Next dev meeting will be 15:00 UK / 16:00 CET on Dec 2
Report/actions:
- Coding specifics:
- YODA 1.8.4 release asap
- Rivet 3.1.3 release: aim for end of Nov (ideally before the next dev meeting ^^^)
- Leif to review DISKinematics numerical issue, see if numerical hygiene can be "fixed", otherwise fall back to setting invalid values and requiring analysis code to test success
- Andy to finish FastJets automatic grooming, and implement MET smearing refinement
- Chris G to propose a solution (storing a _SQRTS in output YODA?) for MC-dependent binnings in rivet-merge (affecting MC_* analyses). [Don't the preloaded YODA files determine the binning? Do the init() methods just need to be tweaked to handle preloading?]
- Andy to refine Nick R's YODA code, pass on to post-paternity Louie for Cythoning
- Progress under Covid:
- UCL (and any others who wish) to try some small local work-meets to break Zoom-fatigue
- Run a Rivet (or general CEDAR) hackathon/social before Xmas: AB to start planning, involve others
- Reactivate working groups on plotting, HepData, stats (== YODA), etc. -- main limitation is time
- Suggestion to actively use MSc students more, particularly those on Scientific Computing or Comp Sci / Sw Engineering. Jon, Leif, Andy to investigate and report more in next dev meeting. Work toward a list of possible projects -- obvious overlap with remaining MCnet short-term PhD studentships, which can now be remote if necessary
- Other initiatives for both paid and volunteer manpower: HL-LHC, FCC-ee/ILC, EIC all require features and analysis development... look for opportunities to link in. Jon/Andy to investigate ee, Christian B/Jon to investigate EIC/FCC-eh
- Jon to report on experiences with UCL research software engineer partial FTE. UK SWIFT-HEP project to be watched for future opportunities to include Rivet and other CEDAR tools. Other relevant schemes in other countries/unis to help with Rivet core technical development & maintenance?
- Main incentive offer to busy physicists is papers, so let's think about the next one that can leverage CEDAR expertise...
- Community connections:
- Andy + Jon to collaborate on a "Future of Rivet" talk for 19 Nov, supporting Christian B's HI MC framing
- Chris G/Jon to set up a MCnet CEDAR YouTube channel for those notorious video tutorials, now that we actually have some!
- Chris G + Andy to polish Chris' weight-name proposal doc. Chris to circulate to ATLAS and CMS for feedback, connecting it to his MCnet meeting presentation to show it's wider than Rivet. Arrange a Rivet + experiment + Pythia/Herwig/Sherpa + MG5/Powheg discussion meeting to discuss and finalise. Suggested generator reps: Leif Gellersen, Simon Plaetzer, Peter Richardson, Frank Siegert, Marek Schoenherr, Enrico Bothmann, Olivier Mattelaer, ... Powheg: Emanuele Re?
