09:42:05 From Ketevi Adikle Assamagan To Nkuiate Harris Sop (Cameroon)(privately) : Thanks. Nice to hear from you. We should chat sometime 09:42:59 From Nkuiate Harris Sop (Cameroon) To Ketevi Adikle Assamagan(privately) : Okay, Sir. 10:22:49 From Nkuiate Harris Sop (Cameroon) : I'm so impressed with the great work that IAPS is doing. 10:24:07 From Nkuiate Harris Sop (Cameroon) : Before now, I taught science advocacy was just for the 'old'. 10:26:23 From Elora McFall (Advocacy&Outreach) : Thanks Nkuiate! Haha not at all, advocacy is for anyone who wants to make a positive change! This is why representation is so important. We need to crush the silly stereotypes :) 10:26:52 From Nkuiate Harris Sop (Cameroon) : How is IAPS making sure that students participate in science policy (decision making)? 10:31:56 From Elora McFall (Advocacy&Outreach) : This is where our working groups come in, if we have several members we could hold themed discussions and have some people focus on the policy side of things and then make other members more aware of the topic 10:33:54 From Nkuiate Harris Sop (Cameroon) : How do you continue advocating in a science resistant community, where people think science is not a lucrative field? How can one overcome such challenges? 10:34:46 From Nkuiate Harris Sop (Cameroon) : Thanks, Elora. 10:35:42 From Mohamed Saleck Heyine : Great job 10:39:24 From Elora McFall (Advocacy&Outreach) : Honestly sometimes it can be tricky. For a lot of people their fear comes from not fully understanding the science and previously being exposed to misinformation. This is why good science communication is so important. When you talk to someone I find it helpful to be understanding of their worries and kindly talk through them. Show empathy rather than just telling them their worries are not possibly true and just insisting that you are right/they are wrong. Hope this helps! 10:40:19 From Nkuiate Harris Sop (Cameroon) : Thanks, Elora. 10:41:27 From Nkuiate Harris Sop (Cameroon) : How do you manage advocacy and research as a student? 10:43:57 From Lawrence lnorris@lnorris.org : One point of advocacy that I have been recently thinking that African physicists and physics students could be about is free, open and reliable broadband internet availability. That is, internet as a public works good, as a science productivity and socioeconomic development enabler. 10:48:13 From Lawrence lnorris@lnorris.org : The International Conference on High Level Physics and Appropriate Solutions to Real Life Problems in Developing Countries in Cameroon resonates with the IAPS conference problem solving competition http://scp-web.org/ 10:49:47 From Elora McFall (Advocacy&Outreach) : Thanks Lawrence I didn’t know about that. I will save the link and look it up after this call! 10:50:27 From Owen Higgins {iaps} : We do have a member committee in Cameroon, perhaps there's a way we can link up with PLANCKS there! 10:50:40 From Ruhi Chitre (IAPS Secretary) : Ooh that sounds amazing! 10:51:34 From Nkuiate Harris Sop (Cameroon) : Without conflict of interest, how do we manage the fact that most students are abandoning basic sciences to engineering. 10:55:52 From Nkuiate Harris Sop (Cameroon) : I've seen great minds abandoned physics to other fields because of lack of job opportunities in the physics and basic science sector. Theory theory theory, they say. 11:00:16 From Elora McFall (Advocacy&Outreach) : I am sure that there are lots of different reasons. From my experience here in Ireland a factor can be people not realising that studying a science gives you the skills to excel in such a broad range of careers, not just academia. A lot of engineering degrees here have specific titles (like electrical engineer) but other science degrees are much broader and they don’t realise exactly what they can do with the degree. (Just one of many factors) 11:00:37 From Elora McFall (Advocacy&Outreach) : Lack of funding is also a huge factor! 11:00:43 From alicreance : Why can't you mobilise Physics department from different universities worldwide instead of students groups? 11:01:39 From Elora McFall (Advocacy&Outreach) : Duarte would you like to answer that? 11:03:49 From alicreance : Okay Thank you! 11:03:55 From Elora McFall (Advocacy&Outreach) : If anyone thinks of a question after the meeting you are always welcome to email us at: ec@iaps.info 11:06:32 From Owen Higgins {iaps} : i've got to head off now, but it was great to talk with everyone! you can hit me up at treasurer@iaps.info for specific questions :) 11:06:51 From Ketevi Adikle Assamagan : Thanks Owen 11:06:53 From Elora McFall (Advocacy&Outreach) : Bye Owen! 11:07:21 From Raymond : Thanks Owen 11:08:37 From Infinix S4 : please, can we get a link to the recorded video. Thank you. 11:11:27 From Toivo Samuel Mabote : I am part of a multidisciplinary group, consisting of physicists and meteorologists students both from the physics department, I would like to know if this type of group can be a member? 11:15:08 From Nkuiate Harris Sop (Cameroon) : We would like ASP to get us, ASP Alumni, engage\involve in such a revolutionary movement. Please..... 11:16:50 From Sofia Ferreira Teixeira (PLANCKS 2021) : PLANCKS 2021 Information Website: https://2021.plancks.org/ Registration: https://events.iaps.info/event/8/ Global Grant: https://2021.plancks.org/registration/plancks-2021-global-grant/ 11:17:25 From Lawrence lnorris@lnorris.org : Many years ago, when I was helping Prof Allotey et al establish the African Physical Society, we wrote into existence the African Association of Physics Students. One of the objectives was to establish an African representation in IAPS and to attract its conference to Africa. 11:18:04 From Lawrence lnorris@lnorris.org : https://www.africanphysicalsociety.org/ 11:28:07 From Sandile Kumalo : Thanks very much Duarte and everyone for the presentations. 11:29:05 From Duarte Graça : Thank you, Sandile! If you want to talk a bit more about joining, just contact us by email: ec@iaps.info 11:29:41 From Toivo Samuel Mabote : Thanks everyone for the presentations 11:30:09 From Elora McFall (Advocacy&Outreach) : And thank you to everyone for taking time to hear about IAPS! 11:30:11 From Ruhi Chitre (IAPS Secretary) : If you think of any ways we can help you, or students in your area, we'd love to hear from you :) 11:31:27 From Nkuiate Harris Sop (Cameroon) : Thanks. 11:31:52 From Raymond : Thanks everyone 11:32:47 From Mohamed Saleck Heyine : Thanks you
