1. Tullio introduced the requirements for the CMS HCAL upgrade, which has similar timescale to us but slightly lower radiation levels. He also mentioned the possibility of using two irradiation facilities at CERN, one with neutrons and one with gammas. The gamma facility is rather easy to access. 2. We discussed more the results from the first irradiation by Syracuse. The suspicion is that latch-up killed the DUT (ACTEL agree that this is a possibility). Frederic commented that in their previous tests, they saw frequent latch-ups. This lead to them implementing automatic power-cycling circuitry on the Calo modules. Frederic will send the details of the device they use. None of the devices they tested were killed by latch-up, probably because of this fast power-cycling (within 2 seconds). 3. We agreed that re-programming should not be done during irradiation. 4. Syracuse are continuing their investigation of the dead device, and will try annealing. They have understood many of the issues they had with the device, and are awaiting feedback from ACTEL on remaining issues. They will implement current monitoring to observe the power supply current during the irradiation. 5. Syracuse will plan a second irradiation for February/March 2011. They will try to obtain four or five devices from ACTEL to irradiate. They may be able to irradiate two devices at the same time. 6. NIKHEF will investigate a compact, “self-testing” TDC implementation to include in the future irradiations. The idea is to somehow monitor the functionality of the PLLs in the device during irradiation. Frederic will talk to the Calo engineers to see if a similar thing can be done including functionality foreseen for the Calo implementation. 7. We will discuss further with Tullio to plan a combined irradiation with CMS at one of the CERN facilities. 8. We discussed the possibility of using sockets or mezzanines to mount the ACTELs in the final modules, to make replacement easier. This could be a good approach if we are close to the radiation limits in some sub-detectors. Nikhef will think about this for the OT. 9. We’ll meet again in January to discuss progress.
