How do you get representatives of over 30 countries to manage the specification and implementation of a service which is then made available to all of them? How do you get several hundred highly qualified and independent-minded engineers to work together to find solutions to the numerous technical problems? How do you persuade funding bodies that your proposals are more deserving of support than other demands on their resources? How do you - over a period of 25 to 30 years - increase the capacity of your service by six orders of magnitude, i.e. by a factor of a million while keeping the cost constant or even reducing it? A History of International Research Networking (Wiley publications, Howard Davies and Beatrice Bressan editors), is a “History Book” about how Europe got its act together and managed to create the most advanced facilities for research networking in the world which gives the right responses to all the above questions. The idea of writing such a history came during the summer of 2006, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Trans European Research and Education Networking Association (TERENA). This book records the main elements of the history of European research networking, including some of the mistakes and dead ends as well as the successes that were encountered along the way. It describes the principal steps which those involved in European research networking have taken, in collaboration with (and sometimes in competition with) their counterparts in North America and other world regions, in the development of the underlying telecommunications infrastructure which today supports the operation of the global Internet. It is a story about people as well as technology; it is not the story of a single individual who made an astonishing step forward but it is the story of individuals making a collaborative effort that really has meant a big leap forward and who have been deeply involved in some aspect of European research networking during the last thirty years. It is also a story about how complicated it can be to reach agreement on technical and organisational issues between so many different countries – how much work goes into establishing and maintaining the consensus between many different nations, each with their own experts and opinions, that is essential to the success of a shared system.

This event has been cancelled "Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology (RAST)", World Scientific 1h In the Library Bldg. 52-1-052

      In the Library Bldg. 52-1-052

      CERN

RAST aims to provide readers with a comprehensive review of the driving and fascinating field of accelerator science and technology. It documents the tremendous progress made in the past decades and describes the bright future. RAST covers a variety of topics, including linear and circular accelerators, high beam power accelerators, high brightness accelerators, synchrotron light sources, free electron lasers, medical accelerators, accelerators for industrial applications, advanced accelerator technologies as well as promising new breakthroughs (such as laser, plasma, wakefield acceleration, and beam physics). Articles are by invitation only. Each article is written by one or more leading scientist with recognized authority in their fields and will be peer reviewed. Beginning in 2008, one volume will be published each year. The first volume provides an overview of various types of accelerators across the entire field, thereas the second concerns "Medical Applications of the Accelerators". Each of the following volumes focuses on one particular type of accelerator and present in-depth discussions and analysis. In order to produce a journal of the highest quality, an Editorial Board consisting of well-known accomplished scientists has been formed. This Board advises the Editors on the long- and short-term planning of the journal, and selection of topics and prospective authors of each volume.

"Field computation for accelerator magnets : analytical and numerical methods for electromagnetic design and optimization", Wiley 1h In the Library - Building 52-1-052

In the Library - Building 52-1-052

      CERN

Written by a leading expert on the electromagnetic design and engineering of superconducting accelerator magnets, this book offers the most comprehensive treatment of the subject to date. In concise and easy-to-read style, the author lays out both the mathematical basis for analytical and numerical field computation and their application to magnet design and manufacture. Of special interest is the presentation of a software-based design process that has been applied to the entire production cycle of accelerator magnets from the concept phase to field optimization, production follow-up, and hardware commissioning. Included topics: •Technological challenges for the Large Hadron Collider at CERN •Algebraic structures and vector fields •Classical vector analysis •Foundations of analytical field computation •Fields and Potentials of line currents •Harmonic fields •The conceptual design of iron- and coil-dominated magnets •Solenoids •Complex analysis methods for magnet design •Elementary beam optics and magnet polarities •Numerical field calculation using finite- and boundary-elements •Mesh generation •Time transient effects in superconducting magnets, including superconductor magnetization and cable eddy-currents •Quench simulation and magnet protection •Mathematical optimization techniques using genetic and deterministic algorithms Practical experience from the electromagnetic design of the LHC magnets illustrates the analytical and numerical concepts, emphasizing the relevance of the presented methods to a great many applications in electrical engineering. The result is an indispensable guide for high-energy physicists, electrical engineers, materials scientists, applied mathematicians, and systems engineers.
