Description
Grid computing enables organisations to share computational and data resources and to access these resources on-demand. As a result, utilisation of the Grid implies innovative yet efficient use of common resources, resulting in potentially massive cost savings, or improved organisational effectiveness.

Unfortunately, cumbersome command line interfaces of current production Grids scare away majority of e-Scientists. Moreover, exaggerated usage of low-level commands definitely sets back the adaptation of Grid technologies in industry.

This half-day course introduces the P-GRADE Portal, a generic high-level graphical interface, successfully used by numerous e-Science projects for application development. P-GRADE Grid Portal enables the creation, execution and monitoring of data-driven computational workflows in Grid environments by high-level intuitive graphical interfaces.

The course is a perfect forum to learn the concept and usage of the P-GRADE Portal. A lecture will explain how to use the portal on EGEE, the largest production Grid infrastructure, while participants can gain hands-on experience during the practical session.

Introduction to Grid computing and the EGEE project 30m
The lecture introduces Grid Computing, e-science and the EU-funded EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-sciencE) project. Grid computing permits "virtual computing" across administrative domains, so that resources can be shared and orchestrated. The EGEE project is establishing a major international Grid infrastructure to support collaborative research, engineering, public service. This intended to interest researchers, lecturers, students and system managers who would like to understand more about these developments.

Introduction to the P-GRADE Portal 1h
The lecture introduces the services provided by the P- GRADE Grid Portal for workflow-oriented Grid application development and execution. Focus is on capabilities available on the gLite middleware platform: certificate management with MyProxy and VOMS; workflow development and import/export; workflow and job execution using the Workload Management System; file management using storage elements, etc.
