Abstract: The quantum description of black holes in string theory usually focusses on very special black holes that preserve supersymmetry. It is thought that more generic black holes suffer uncontrollable corrections. We explicitly compute several types of corrections to generic black holes in general relativity. We find that they simplify greatly in theories with supersymmetry even when the black holes themselves do not preserve any supersymmetry. This result suggests a simple microscopic origin of black hole entropy also for nonextremal black holes.
