Present status of 14T+ magnet design 20mSpeaker: Gloria Bellini (Ministere des affaires etrangeres et europeennes (FR))
30/01/2024: Follow-up meeting
Participants: Juan Carlos, Susana, Gloria, Ariel, Jose, Nicolas Peray and Ezio
Agenda:
- - Gloria to present the status on his work for the 14 T design.
- - Nicolas Peray to present ongoing work on the winding tests.
Update from Juan Carlos:
- Ariel is joining the team. His first task will be to work on the winding tests. Other project tasks will be defined soon.
- Cable from Ian Pong (LBNL) is coming: 56 strands of MQXF type (0.85 mm, 1.2 Cu2SC). Thierry Boutboul will organize a meeting upon reception. This cable will be part of the winding tests. (Reminder: FRESCA2 is 40 strands 1 mm).
Update from Ezio:
- Juan is asked to prepare a presentation on the status of the project. This is a good opportunity for everybody to catch up on where we are, especially for newcomers. The summary should cover all explored cross-sections, a possible timeline for this year, the cable availability, etc.
- Ezio emphasizes that initially we should explore all options.
Update from Gloria:§ 40 mm aperture design is based on the FRESCA2 (RMM, E-RMC) cable type but with less copper (40 strands, 1 mm). 40 strand is the limit of the cabling machine at CERN.
§ Gloria showed the ANSYS results for this 40 mm design. It has been agreed that we should keep 5 mm G10 plate on top of the coils. For the vertical pad pusher insert, the preferred option is just a trapezoidal insert on the iron.
§ The simulations consider that the bladder pressure is applied at the same time for all bladders. New simulations will be performed by just pumping vertical and horizontal bladders separately.
§ The impact of the key position is also studied, based on different bladder widths available. Gloria has been asked to check if making the key a bit smaller (MQXF is 14 mm) could help.
Update from Nicolas Peray:
§ Nicolas showed the proposed tooling for easy and hard way bending winding tests.
§ He has been asked to explore the possibility of testing lower bending radius (than the ones stablished as baseline today), in order to find the limits of the investigated cables.
ACTION ITEMS:
§ For Gloria: Add LoadLine margin to slides. Target should be 20%.
§ For Gloria: Repeat the same analysis (done for the 40 mm aperture) for the 50 mm aperture.
§ For Gloria: Check the way the bladders are inflated. Separate between vertical and horizontal operations.
§ For Gloria: Check G10 material properties.
§ For Nico: Explore the possibility of testing a lower bending radius.
