Lorentz and CPT Violation in Top-Quark Sector in the SME
Since the birth of physics, the study of symmetries has made possible a useful and powerful tool for understanding the behavior of nature; So that gradually symmetries became the main pillar of our theoretical formulation of the laws of physics. In addition, finding any deviations from exact symmetries in nature helps to further understand physical phenomena.
The standard model (SM) is a relativistic quantum field theory, and as a fundamental theory, it preserves Lorentz and CPT symmetry, However models of quantum gravity (e.g., string theory and quantum loop gravity) can predict breaking of Lorentz and CPT invariance at a high energy scale. The Standard-Model Extension (SME) provides a comprehensive effective field theory framework for the study of spontaneous Lorentz and CPT violation. A Lorentz-violating term in the Lagrange density of SME is an observable scalar density defined by contracting a Lorentz-violating operator with a coefficient for Lorentz violation that controls the size of the associated effects.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can produce several million single-top or single-antitop events and even more top-antitop pairs, so it can reasonably be viewed as a top-quark factory. The high statistical power provided by the LHC dataset provides the opportunity to use top-quark physics to investigate profound issues involving the validity of underlying features of quantum field theory and the SM in the third generation. In this seminar, we review the prospects for studying the foundational Lorentz and CPT symmetries of the SM at the scale of the top quark in the SME framework.Speaker: Ms Arshin Khajeh borj sefidi (Isfahan University of Technology) - 3
