Description
After a short introduction to CERN, the lecture will explain how physics results are obtained at CERN: by comparing statistical quantities of experimental data with corresponding expectations based on theoretical models. The processing steps from the raw, unfiltered detector data to a statistical analysis of observables will be explained, passing via the trigger/DAQ systems, calibration, reconstruction, and analysis. Simulation techniques as a means of providing the theoretical expectations will also be introduced. The lecture will give an overview; detailed presentations on trigger/DAQ systems, reconstruction, and simulation will follow later in the lecture programme. It is intended for all Openlab summer students and does not require physics knowledge.
