Description

Goals

There are two primary goals for this workshop:

Understand the types of support to be provided in EGI and the desired support model.
Understand the scope and work plans of the SSCs.

For the second point, the information in Section 3 of the SSC Guidelines documents should be collected and sent to the list a couple of days before the workshop. If possible, a preliminary list of partners in each SSC should be provided, along with a description of each partners role in the work plan and whether their activity will likely be funded or unfunded.

Participation

Participation in this meeting is open. However, the meeting will be geared toward those looking to define, to create, and to organize an SSC for EGI. If you will only be part of a user community served by an SSC, this meeting is probably not for you. All participants must register for the meeting.

Getting Here

The Laboratoire de l'Accelerateur Lineaire (LAL) is located about 25 km south of the center of Paris and is easily accessible via the RER B (Metro). The LAL website contains detailed information about how to get to LAL from the Paris airports and train stations. The closest airport to LAL is Orly.

Accommodation

Please make reservations directly with your hotel. The list of hotels on LAL's website contains hotels in the 5th, 6th, 13th and 14th "arrondissements" as well as a few near the Orsay campus. The above neighborhoods are the most convenient for catching the RER B train to Orsay.

  The current status of the EGI-related proposals will be presented, including the core EGI proposal, middleware proposal(s), and (potentially) others. The latest information and impressions of the targeted calls will be presented and how each proposal relates to the FP7 Capacity Call 7.

  SSC Preparations
  The Scientific SSCs should prepare documents following the referenced SSC guidelines and distribute them before the meeting. In addition, they should prepare (short!) presentations covering the following points:
  - Contact points within the EGI management structure that are different and/or in addition to those in the EGI_DS Blueprint and Functions documents.
  - Identify "heavy" and/or VO-specific services that are needed by the community to fully exploit the EGI infrastructure.
  - Identify the institutes/projects/NGIs that have been contacted about the SSC.
  - Identify any ESFRI projects that have been contacted.
  - Identify likely partners that will be funded.
  - Identify likely partners that will be unfunded.
  - Identify common tools/libraries for porting that will be useful for the community. (E.g. BLAST, LAPACK, ...)
  Also create a rough draft of the work plan for the SSC, identifying whether the activities within the work plan are Networking Activities, Service Activities, or Joint Research Activities. Also provide a rough calculation of the effort required.

  Each of the support activities should prepare a (short!) presentation addressing the following points:
  - How will the support activity will connect to and coordinate with the other support activities?
  - With the user, user communities, and SSCs?
  - What tools are required to provide the services and how will the support activity interact with them? (E.g. GGUS.)
  - What institutes/projects/teams/NGIs have been contacted about participating in this support activity?
  - Which of those are likely to be funded partners in the support activity?
  - Which are likely to be unfunded partners?
  In addition, each support activity should prepare an initial draft work plan (with activities identified as Networking Activities, Service Activities, or Joint Research Activities). This draft work plan should include an initial estimate of the manpower required (in FTE per year).
  Everyone should be prepared to discuss the Direct User Support and VO Support which appear not to have champions for EGI. In particular, we should discuss where these will fit in EGI.
  As a general topic, we should discuss what is the overall procedure for bringing and supporting new users and new communities. How is this coordinated? How do the SSCs fit into this?

  Discussion/Overflow
  
  As in the EGEE-III project, the user community plays a strong role in various technical working groups, like MPI support and portal use. In EGI, there will be a need for similar working groups and some of these are probably good candidates for cross-SSC activities in the SSC project proposal. One item that keeps coming up in discussions with the Commission is "Usability and Accessibility". We should discuss this and determine if there are other topics which could be similarly treated.
  
  This session will also act as an overflow of the previous sessions and a general discussion of the next steps to take.
