Description

Advanced Technology at the University of Twente is a broad BSc program, preparing students for various MSc programs. Students can decide to enroll in applied physics, applied mathematics, mechanical -, biomedical -, electrical - or chemical engineering or even business related studies.

This annual CERN visit is organized for AT BSc students who follow courses on thermodynamics and electromagnetism and the visit at CERN contributes to the exam material. They will specifically look into the wonderful world of superconductors and superconducting technology, in specific magnet design. A group of 48 visitors is expected, including students from many different countries. This program is truly international due to the international character of the Advanced Technology program at the University of Twente in the Netherlands.

The visit program covers four days in Geneva of which three at CERN. The group always arrives on Monday with their own transport in Geneva and the CERN program starts on Tuesday morning. Besides standard CERN Visits Service itineraries, additional lab visits are planned, as well as lectures and workshops. At the end of the third day, the students have to present their work in smaller groups and get graded on their results.

CERN welcomes the Advanced Technology students from the University of Twente in Geneva!

      • 12:00
Lecture Applied Superconductivity at CERN 1h

At CERN unique technology is used and the Higgs boson would not have been discovered without technologies based on a fundamental physics phenomenon seen for the first time ever in the Netherlands more than one hundred years ago: superconductivity. Cavities, accelerator magnets and detector magnets integrated in the LHC and its experiments all rely on superconductivity!

    • 13:15 14:00
      Lunch 45m R1

      R1

      CERN

In restaurant one (R1), at own cost. There are different menus, including vegetarian, pasta and pizza, meat, fish, cold buffet, wok and grill. Sandwiches are also an option. One ideally pays with CHF, but EUR (bills not coins) are excepted as well. Change is always in CHF. Also the possibility to pay with a bank card.

        FRESCA+wire test stations+cabling machine@B163: group B 1h 25m

In B163 interesting work is performed concerning superconducting wires and cables. There are several test stations, where several wires can be tested in parallel. Magnetization measurements and Ic measurements are performed on many different wires. FRESCA gives the possibility to test cables carrying high current in a high magnetic background field. Additionally, the cabling machine can be visited, where with wire spools are used in parallel to wind Rutherford-type cables.

        CERN

The fantastic and unexpected properties of liquid nitrogen and materials cooled down by it are discussed and experimentally shown during a nice and interactive show. Besides that, measurements will be performed on High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) tape, as well as heat transfer measurements, showing the strong influence of the surface on the cooling properties of an object.
