James was born in the UK, brought up in Mallorca, and studied Computer Science at Brunel University (UK). James started at CERN in 1989 (the year of LEP start-up and the invention of WWW) working since the inception of the AIS project and associated tools. James is passionate about understanding the needs and delivering the services and strategy required to meet them. He strives to modernise, innovate and make a difference. In 2006, James moved to HR Department eventually leading the newly created Talent Acquisition group in 2012 and in 2016 was nominated head of HR.
The interview will be conducted by Anna Cook Deputy Group Leader of the Talent Acquisition Group in the HR department. Anna studied Biological Sciences and Immunology and she joined CERN in 2004, beginning her career in the IT Department on the Enabling Grids for E-SciencE project for 6 years, also holding the role of Deputy Departmental Planning Officer for IT from 2008-2010. In 2010 she joined HR, first heading up the newly created Staff Recruitment Unit for 6 years. From 2016 to 2020, Anna was deputy head of Talent Acquisition (HR-TA), covering all CERN professional, graduate and student recruitment programmes, as well as the records and Cards team. This also encompassed the role of HR communication liaison, notably coordinating TA communication and outreach initiatives. Since January 2021, Anna is responsible for Communications, Reporting and Analytics in HR.
